'Irreversible change' in higher ed predicted

David Ward, who as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison has led a landmark renewal of the campus's commitment to teaching and public service, will speak at UC Davis on Thursday, Feb. 5. Ward's talk, "The Challenge of 'Irreversible' Change in Higher Education," begins at 4:10 p.m. in the University Club dining room. He is the second of four leaders in higher education scheduled to speak in the Chancellor's 1997-98 Forum on the Future series on campus. Since becoming chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1993, Ward has spearheaded efforts to improve the quality of undergraduate education and increase commitment to public service. He recently published a comprehensive strategic planning document, outlining priorities for the next decade as the university works toward balancing its teaching, research and outreach missions. One way the university can unify its activities, Ward says, is by emphasizing learning as a central goal. His call for developing campus learning communities was echoed recently by the Kellogg Commission on the Future of State and Land-Grant Universities. He serves with UC Davis Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef on the 25-member commission.
