Joan Margaret Edlund needs extra seats for her family at next month's graduation ceremony. And she has good reason. At 62,Edlund is the oldest UC Davis graduate this year. "At my age," she says, "I can really appreciate the value of an education much more than my classmates who are 40 years younger. They're looking at education as a tool for future employment; I'm looking at it as an experience to be cherished." Her four children and five grandchildren will be at her commencement program, where she hopes to stick out among the more than 1,000 faces who will participate in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences graduation ceremonies. An agricultural and managerial economics major, Edlund plans to work in farm management in the Salinas area. This degree is very special to Edlund, since she never graduated from high school. "My age gives me certain advantages over other students who might feel somewhat intimidated in class," Edlund says. "I've earned the right to be candid," she adds, identifying a trait her classmates have come to appreciate. The commencement program will be Saturday, June 15, at 9 a.m. in Recreation Hall.
