It's a Picnic at UC Davis

One of the largest annual picnics in California will take place Saturday, April 11, when tens of thousands of people come to the University of California, Davis, for Picnic Day. Opening ceremonies for the daylong campus open house will begin at 9:30 a.m. on the north end of the Quad, followed by a parade through the campus and downtown Davis. The parade marshals for the 79th Picnic Day will be Wayne A. and Jacque A. Bartholomew, UC Davis alumni and longtime campus supporters. Jacque is a trustee of the Cal Aggie Foundation, a member of the Davis Chancellor's Club and past president of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association (CAAA). Wayne is chair of the Davis Chancellor's Club Fellows and a former CAAA director. "Moovin' Ahead" is the theme of this year's celebration. It combines recognition of UC Davis' agricultural history as well as continued progress and growth, according to student Erin Beaty, Picnic Day publicity chair. Attached is a schedule of events. Highlights for the day include: • The annual Fun Run, a 5-kilometer race through campus beginning at 8 a.m., with registration at 7:30 a.m. on the east end of the Quad; • A student organization fair on the quad that features student activities and programs on campus; • The campus's new Walter A. Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center will be open to visitors; • Police dog demonstrations and the traditional dachshund races will be among six different dog events scheduled throughout the day near Recreation Hall; • A panel discussion on global economic trends, featuring UC Davis faculty, will begin at 1 p.m. in 100 Hunt Hall; • A college bowl, featuring an all-star student team, will match wits with UC Davis administrators beginning at 2 p.m. in 198 Young Hall; and • A fashion show featuring the newest designs of the 1990s by student design majors will take place in front of Walker Hall at noon and 2 p.m. Musical entertainment, sporting events, departmental exhibits, a rodeo and a "battle of the marching bands" are also planned. Food concessions will be available on campus, but no alcohol is allowed. The campus bus system will be operating in the Davis community on Picnic Day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., leaving from the Memorial Union. Most bus lines will be operating, and the fare will be 50 cents. Registration passes and tickets will not be accepted. Everyone is encouraged to use this service, since parking will be limited on campus. Picnic Day is organized by a 12-member student board of directors, led by Georgene Poulakidas. This annual open house gives the UC Davis campus an opportunity to showcase its accomplishments.
