It's a Picnic at UC Davis

One of the largest picnics in the nation will take place Saturday, April 20, when tens of thousands of people come to the University of California, Davis, for its annual Picnic Day. Opening ceremonies for the daylong 83rd campus open house will begin at 9:30 a.m. on the north end of the Quad, followed by a traditional parade through the campus and downtown Davis. Campus departments, student groups, marching bands and the first-ever bug doctor are the features of this year's event. The parade marshal will be Carol Wall, vice chancellor for student affairs at UC Davis. She has an extensive history at UC Davis, earning all three of her degrees from the campus beginning with her bachelor's degree in anthropology and art history in 1963. She has served the campus as a professor, graduate adviser, associate dean of the College of Letters and Science and, most recently, was named vice chancellor for student affairs last year. "Carrying the Torch of Tradition" is the theme of this year's celebration. UC Davis students chose the theme to recognize the long-standing traditions of UC Davis and the Davis community, according to Angela DeMars, Picnic Day publicity chair. Attached is a schedule of events. Highlights for the day include: • Parade 10 a.m. at the intersection of North Quad and West Quad • Bug doctor to diagnose plant ailments for public 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the front steps of Briggs Hall • Police dog agility demonstrations and the traditional dachshund races are among several different dog events scheduled 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in and around Recreation Hall • Chemistry magic show noon in 194 Chemistry Building • Battle of the Bands 2 p.m. on the Putah Creek east lawn • Track, soccer, water polo, volleyball, tennis, rugby and karate will highlight a day of intercollegiate athletic competition and sporting exhibitions. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at all athletic fields and Hickey Gym Dancing, department exhibits and a body-building exhibition are also planned.
