It's Time to Plan Long-term Growth for UC Davis

Before the campus can grow beyond the vision of the 1994 Long Range Development Plan, campus planners must seek community consensus on how best to accommodate growth over the next 10 to 15 years. By 2010, the campus needs to accommodate a projected total campus enrollment of 30,000 to 31,000 students. Campus Planner Bob Segar predicts it will take two years of creating scenarios and evaluating them in public meetings before an environmental impact report and new Long Range Development Plan are ready for approval by the UC Board of Regents. Over the next six months, the team in the Office of Planning and Budget will be analyzing the impact of the projected 2010 campus enrollment. "Then we'll need to translate it to demand for new facilities," Segar says. The plan will consider alternatives for parking, transit, housing, labs, offices and campus infrastructure like roads and utilities. "We plan to study a full range of options to see how we can take responsibility for that growth," Segar says. In the fall, a public advisory committee composed of representatives from on- and off-campus constituencies will begin town-hall meetings to discuss different ideas of how our 5,200-acre campus should grow. The first order of business is to assure that there is adequate space in the academic core of the campus to handle growth needs. "We'll be looking for opportunities for 'infill' development in the academic core to keep interaction at a high level among faculty members and students," Segar says. Another key goal is to locate new academic buildings so that they create good open spaces and gathering areas like the Life Sciences Addition, Dutton Hall and the new Plant Sciences and Environmental Sciences Building. "We also anticipate that we will be studying scenarios in which we host a greater amount of housing and affiliated research facilities than we have in the past." The last LRDP said that UC Davis should have a target of accommodating 25 percent of the students on campus property.
