The Rev. Jesse Jackson today canceled two scheduled appearances at the University of California, Davis, for Saturday, May 22.
Jackson was scheduled to speak at the School of Law commencement and an event during Black Family Week.
Instead, he will continue to attend the African-African American Summit being held this week in Accra, Ghana. Stephanie Gadlin, press secretary for the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, says President Clinton asked Jackson, who is co-chairing the U.S. delegation, to remain at the summit through its closing ceremonies Friday night.
"Though the law school community is disappointed by the news, we certainly understand the importance of the Reverend Jackson's role at the African-African American Summit," Rex Perschbacher, dean of the law school, says.
