Three nationally recognized critics of the uses of science in public policy will participate in the half-day symposium "Science or Junk Science: The Law, Science and Public Policy" on Tuesday, May 2, at UC Davis. Henry Miller, a visiting fellow at Stanford University and former director of the Office of Biotechnology at the Food and Drug Administration, will address federal biotechnology policy and federal regulations. Bruce Ames, professor of biochemistry at UC Berkeley, will address public perceptions of pesticides and the causes of cancer. Peter Huber, an expert on liability law and a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, will assess how science is used and misused in the courts, and the public's perception of risk. The event is co-sponsored by the UC Davis Institute of Governmental Affairs; the George C. Marshall Institute in Washington, D.C.; and the Pacific Research Institute for Public Policy in San Francisco. It will be held 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Putah Creek Lodge on campus.
