K-12 and UC Davis seek new fruitful partnerships

Teams of Sacramento-area principals, teachers, counselors and parents will join UC Davis faculty, staff and students at an April 30 "Partners in Education" forum to take a fresh look at how K-12 and universities can best work together to improve students' academic success, particularly among students who are disadvantaged. "The university and the public schools must take a more active role in working together to bring about effective change, " said UC Davis Chancellor Larry N. Vanderhoef. "We hope the forum will provide all of us with valuable information on university and school collaborations." Speakers include Kati Haycock, director of The Education Trust Inc. of Washington, D.C., who challenges universities in a recent Change magazine article to look beyond "adding an innovation here and partnership there....The time has come for leaders in higher education to take a fresh look at the nature of their involvement with the public schools and to begin to think -- and act -- differently." Susana Navarro, executive director of the El Paso Collaborative for Academic Excellence, will discuss her collaborative, which is recognized as a national model of citywide efforts to recreate schools. The forum will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the UC Davis Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center.
