-- The Library of Congress recently selected Katherine Vaz's second novel, "Mariana," as one of the top 30 international books for 1998. The associate English professor's book is based on the life of Sister Mariana Alcoforado of Beja, Portugal, and has been sold in six languages. It also has been optioned for a movie by the former director of development for Martin Scorsese, Anne Harrison.
