Key Clinton Administration Official to Address Law School Grads

Leon Panetta, federal Office of Management and Budget director and former California congressman, will deliver the University of California, Davis, law school commencement address at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 21. Panetta, who was confirmed in January 1993, has chief responsibility for overseeing the federal budget. Before joining the Clinton administration, Panetta served eight full terms as a U.S. representative from California. Among legislation Panetta succeeded in enacting are the Hunger Prevention Act, the Fair Employment Practices Resolution, measures to protect the California coast from offshore oil and gas drilling, and Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement of hospice care for the terminally ill. He was a key participant in the 1990 budget summit as well as other budget summits during the 1980s. He has a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Santa Clara and a law degree from the University of Santa Clara law school. He served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1966. UC Davis law students selected Panetta to speak at commencement for several reasons, including his national prominence in the Clinton administration and his background as a California legislator and law student, said John Thawley, a UC Davis law student who will receive his juris doctor degree at the ceremony. "We wanted someone who could speak to the law school experience. He can say some relevant things about what we are facing in the future," Thawley said. The law school's 25th commencement ceremony will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the UC Davis Recreation Hall. Bruce Wolk, dean of the law school, will give welcoming remarks and present the Law School Medal, which goes to the top student of the graduating class. Other speakers during the commencement ceremony will include Kelli Evans, a graduating law student, and James Hogan, a law school professor. A reception for the 146 graduating students and their families will be held following the ceremony at the University Club.
