Kids to be transported to Andes as music crosses borders

The Chilean group Inti-Illimani, exiled from its country for 15 years until 1990, will give school children a taste of Chile's musical landscape Thursday, Nov. 14, in a special matinee performance at UC Davis. The group, brought to campus by UC Davis Presents, will play at 11 a.m. in Freeborn Hall. News media are invited to attend and film the first 15 minutes of the performance. Inti-Illimani will play again later that evening for the public. The driving force behind the Nueva Cancion movement, the group started with six college students who wanted to counteract the alternative sounds of imported pop and to explore Chile's traditional musical sounds. Surviving political turmoil over the years, they returned to Chile in 1990 to thousands of adoring fans. Together now for 30 years, the group still plays Andean folk music on traditional instruments.
