More than 150 elementary school children are counting on students at UC Davis to teach them how to move in step with traditional Mexican dances on Saturday, Feb. 27. Kids from three counties -- Sacramento, Yolo and Solano -- will be taught on campus by members of the Danzantes del Alma dance troupe, a 16-year-old UC Davis student organization that regularly performs throughout Northern California. By reaching out to the community, the dance group has become a positive force in the university's efforts to promote diversity, according to Blanca Rodriguez, student manager of the troupe. "In addition to teaching steps to some of the dances, we talk about the importance of keeping in step with a culturally diverse community," says Rodriguez. This all-day dance conference begins at 8:30 a.m. and culminates with a dance contest in the campus Coffee House.
