La Raza Cultural Days Celebration May 1-6

The 25th annual La Raza Cultural Days celebration will take place May 1-6 at the University of California, Davis, with more than 4,000 people expected to attend. The free public celebration, with a theme of "Together We Fight and Together We Win," begins Sunday, May 1, with the 7th annual 5K and 10K Run/Walk. At noon, the 25th annual "tardeada" family festival begins. The festival, to be held on the Quad, includes folk dancing, traditional foods, live musical entertainment including mariachis, marimba and banda, and a car exhibit. A health fair will also be held, providing free cholesterol, dental and eye screening. The La Raza Cultural Days will continue throughout the week, with folk dancing demonstrations, lectures, films and music reflecting the Chicano/Latino experience in the United States and in Central and South America. Event highlights include: • A Chicano/Latino engineering forum sponsored by the Chicano and Latino Engineering and Science Society. 7 p.m. Monday, May 2, DeCarli Room in the Memorial Union • A reception honoring Professor Patricia Zavella, a distinguished visiting scholar from UC Santa Cruz, and Carmen Huaco-Nuzum, a UC President's Fellow, sponsored by the UC Davis Chicana/Chicano Studies program and Chicana/Latina Research Center. 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, MUII in the Memorial Union • A carne asada lunch-plate fund-raiser sponsored by Hermanos Macehual and Mujeres Ayudando la Raza. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, on the Quad • Cinco de Mayo celebration, with music, food and entertainment; Danzantes de Alma will perform traditional Mexican dances. Noon Thursday, May 5, on the Quad • Salsa Baile (dance) with music by Conquista Musical, a salsa group from the Fresno area.
