Up-to-date information on California flooding is now available viahome computer, thanks to the efforts of hydrologic science faculty and staff members at UC Davis. Since January, the Flood Information Page has been posted daily on an international network of computers through the World Wide Web, updating information from state and federal agencies regarding flooded rivers, closed roads, locations of Red Cross centers and even directions on how to file a flood insurance claim. The service is part of the California Environmental Resources Evaluation System, developed to distribute information by computer to the public. "CERES is intended to become a model program for the state in providing information to the public on topics ranging from fire management to land use," says Susan Ustin, an assistant professor of environmental and resource sciences at UC Davis. The flood page has been enormously popular, recording as many as 15,000 computer connections daily, according to Quinn Hart, the UC Davis computer programmer and analyst who developed and manages the database. It may be accessed by computer at http://ceres.resources.agency.ca.
