Law School Lecturer Named 1995 Trial Lawyer of the Year

The Trial Lawyers for Public Justice have named James Smith, a lecturer at the UC Davis law school, as a recipient of the 1995 Trial Lawyer of the Year Award for his work on the litigation team that prosecuted Xuncax vs. Gramajo. In the case, a federal district court held Gen. Hector Gramajo responsible for a campaign of human rights violations in Guatemala. Gramajo was required to pay $47.5 million to one U.S. and nine Guatemalan victims. All but one of the Guatemalan plaintiffs were clients of the UC Davis School of Law.
