Local educator leaves $1 million for scholarships

A third-generation Sacramentan has willed the bulk of her estate, valued at $1 million, to found new scholarships at the University of California, Davis. Alva M. Englund, who died in January, asked that half of the funds be used to establish the Alva M. Englund Scholarship in the English department and that the other half be used to create, in honor of her late husband, the Walter J. Englund Scholarship in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Believing that a sound education serves as a foundation for world understanding and peace, Englund dedicated herself to education and to children. For two decades she worked in Sacramento city schools. From 1957 to 1973, she taught at H.W. Harkness Elementary School, then transferred to Fruitridge Elementary for a year. Finally, she worked as a resource teacher in math and English at Sutter Junior High School until 1977. Her efforts and accomplishments were recognized by the National Education Association, which twice named her a teacher of the year. Her brother, Jack Berger of Sacramento, said Englund was a lifelong learner who loved to travel and read and was especially interested in history. She never had children, but "she loved kids, so her class kids were her family," Berger said. Englund attended California State University, Chico, and the University of California, Los Angeles. Walter Englund, who died in 1981, attended UC Davis and studied agricultural economics at UC Berkeley. He worked for the California Department of Food and Agriculture for 25 years, where he authored several agricultural publications.
