Students at UC Davis have found that communicating with friends, family and professors by computer is far easier and cheaper than using the telephone. E-mail (electronic mail) is fast becoming a popular alternative. Students can use the international computer network, Internet, by registering for a free electronic mail account, says Tim Leehane, technology trainer at UC Davis. Leehane works for a campus service that provides instructional courses for students and faculty interested in e-mail, as well as other more advanced courses in computer networking. "Last fall, for the first time, 16 workshops were held for students interested in electronic communication and they were at capacity," says Leehane. "So this winter we're adding more courses." More than 15,500 UC Davis students have registered for an e-mail account and can use the free service either on their own computer or on the more than 300 campus terminals that are dedicated for student use.
