Mask Exhibition Faces The Nation

Exhibit title: "Face the Nation" A national juried mask competition Date: Feb. 22-March 19 Where: Design Gallery 145 Walker Hall University of California, Davis Hours: noon-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 2-5 p.m. Sundays Reception: 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21 With 97 masks -- many created using ceramics, papier-mâché, leather, metal and wood -- the juried collection in "Face the Nation" will offer an exciting display of diverse works from 17 states. The exhibition, sponsored by the support group Design Alliance, celebrates the "Year of American Craft," as proclaimed by Congress. Representing artists from New York to Hawaii, the masks were selected by Berkeley-based artist Katherine Westphal. A UC Davis professor emeritus, Westphal has exhibited her works widely in museums that include the American Craft Museum in New York City and the San Francisco Craft and Folk Art Museum. An awards ceremony for the artists in "Face the Nation" is planned for the opening reception, to which the public is invited.
