Students receiving Master of Business Administration degrees are recognizing that corporate America no longer offers the same opportunities as in the past for job-seeking graduates. Economic reality is forcing large-scale downsizing of companies in almost every business sector, according to Don Blodger, career services director at the Graduate School of Management at UC Davis. "Students are quickly seeing that once plentiful career opportunities are now more scarce and jobs are less secure than they were in the past," says Blodger. He also identifies a change in the attitude of those graduating with M.B.A.s. "Students now seem much more focused on quality of life than they are on getting big paychecks. Our graduates are seeking jobs that allow them to balance family and recreational needs with job demands," says Blodger. As a result, students are gravitating to small or mid-sized companies in smaller communities, because they want to avoid the problems associated with big cities.
