May 14, Thursday -- Author, poet, playwright and actress Maya Angelou will speak at 8 p.m. in UC Davis' Recreation Hall. The deliverer of the poem at President Clinton's inauguration in 1992, she may be best known for the autobiography of her childhood, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." Raped as a 7-year-old, Angelou stopped talking for six years because she was convinced that the voice she used to tell of the attack led community members to kill her rapist. In addition to having been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony, she won a Grammy for the recorded poem "On the Pulse of Morning." Angelou's career has also included work with Martin Luther King Jr. and service on two presidential commissions. Her speech is being sponsored by Student Forums at UC Davis.
