WHAT: The University of California, Davis, has scheduled a public memorial service for the victims of the March 27 boat accident in the Sea of Cortez. The ceremony will be open to all friends, colleagues, students and members of the public who wish to remember the five who did not return from the research expedition in Mexico and to offer condolences to their families. WHO: The memorial will honor Gary Polis, chair of the UC Davis Department of Environmental Science and trip organizer; Michael D. Rose, postgraduate researcher and technician for Professor Polis; and Kyoto University ecology professors Masahiko Higashi, Takuya Abe and Shigeru Nakano. (Professor Nakano remains missing and is presumed dead.) Speakers will include colleagues and friends of the victims, expedition members, Japanese Consul General Nobuaki Tanaka, UC Board of Regents Chairman John Davies, and UC Davis Chancellor Larry N. Vanderhoef. WHEN: Monday, April 10, at 3:30 p.m. for media to be assembled and set up. The service will begin promptly at 4 p.m. and will last approximately one hour and will be followed by a courtyard reception. WHERE: Freeborn Hall on the UC Davis campus. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: Media are invited to cover the event from a designated location inside Freeborn Hall. In order to respect the solemn nature of the occasion, we ask that media remain in this area for the duration of the ceremony. We also ask that you please respect the privacy of family members and survivors who will be in attendance, including at the reception following the ceremony. We will provide splitters for sound access. No flash photography or additional lighting will be allowed inside Freeborn Hall.
