The 24th annual Native American Powwow and Cultural Days at the University of California, Davis, celebrating American Indian history and culture will be held on campus Monday through Sunday, April 4-10.
More than 6,000 Native Americans from the United States, Canada and Mexico are expected to participate in the public event through song and dance.
The weeklong Native American cultural days celebration includes lectures that highlight issues affecting American Indians and entertainment reflecting the Native American experience.
Event highlights include:
• Medicine wheel formed by UC Davis students.
Noon to 1 p.m. Monday, April 4, on the Quad
• Native American food and Aztec dancers.
Noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, on the Quad
• Native American expert Robert Warrior of Stanford University will speak on "Native American Intellectual Thought."
7 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, 1150 Hart Hall
• California Indian Dancers and arts and crafts show.
Noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, April 7, on the Quad
• "Native American Art and Printmaking" by Indian artist Jean LaMarr.
4 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 1130 Hart Hall
• Intertribal dancers and host drums.
Noon to 1 p.m. Friday, April 8, Quad
• The weekend powwow -- song, dances, arts and crafts as well as food.
Noon to midnight Saturday, April 9, and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 10. All powwow activities will be in Recreation Hall.
"Every song, gesture and detail of the ornate clothing worn during this year's powwow illustrates a part of Indian heritage as a people with roots in the past," said Lucky Preston, program coordinator of the Native American Cultural Days program at UC Davis. "The powwow preserves Native American traditions of sharing, hospitality and generosity."
