The California experience is incomplete without a sampling of the state's rich and varied agricultural industry. To connect tourists with genuine farm activities, the University of California Small Farm Center has created a new online database at .
"We're not listing theme parks, but real working farms that are welcoming visitors to enjoy the rural setting, farm-fresh produce, open space and more simple way of life," says Desmond Jolly, director of the UC Small Farm Center at UC Davis. "These farms aren't listed in typical travel guides."
The database is an outgrowth of the Small Farm Center's agri-tourism program, launched three years ago to help operators of small farms and ranches market not only their commodities, but also the farm experience and ambience to urban visitors.
The new database, which includes more than 300 farms, can be searched by region, county or categories such as accommodations, direct agricultural sales, educational experience, entertainment and outdoor recreation. Individual entries provide specific information about products and services, hours of operation, directions and contact information.
Included in the database are on-farm bed-and-breakfasts, U-pick operations, farmers' markets, pumpkin patches, Christmas tree farms, corn mazes, farm-animal petting zoos, wineries, agricultural heritage museums, festivals and fairs.
