New Booklet Aims to Rid Teaching of Gender Bias

A new booklet at UC Davis aims to identify and find solutions for gender-biased teaching. Called "Creating Gender Equity in Your Teaching," it contains tips and ideas written by Robby Henes, director of the Center for Women in Engineering, as a handout for workshops. Gender bias refers to subtle messages in classroom communication and activities that may cause women to lose confidence, contribute less and be perceived as less capable students. "In both men and women, gender-biased activities are almost always at the subconscious level," Henes says. "That's why the issue is so relevant; it's not considered a normal part of a teacher's education." The booklet, which has been requested by a number of universities across the country, points out different ways teachers can become more effective instructors, particularly for women in their classes.
