New Center Aims to Help More African Americans Enter College

To encourage more young African Americans to attend college, a new educational advising center is opening in the Sacramento area. Staffed by volunteers from the region's colleges, including UC Davis, the African American Educational Advising Program will offer information on colleges and universities, admissions requirements, financial aid, vocational training opportunities and career advising services, according to program coordinator Donald Moore, an adviser with the UC Davis Student Leadership Center. "As a group of educators, we're concerned about the very low college eligibility of African American students in our region," says Moore. Students, parents and community members are invited to attend the sessions every Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and alternate Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. beginning Saturday, Feb. 5. The informational programs will be held in the Parent Center at Father Keith B. Kenny Elementary School at 3525 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Oak Park.
