New Facility To Keep Grapevines and More Free of Diseases

A new facility devoted to importation, quarantine and distribution of grapevines, as well as to "clean stock" programs for deciduous fruit and nut trees, roses, strawberries and sweet potatoes, is opening its doors at UC Davis. An open house showcasing the new, one-story National Grapevine Importation and Clean Stock Facility will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Friday, April 21. The 15,620-square-foot facility, located just west of the University Airport and south of Hutchison Drive, will provide grapevine quarantine services and serve as a center for researchers working to develop better methods for detecting diseases. "California's vineyards are vulnerable to countless diseases and destructive pests," says Deborah Golino, a plant pathology researcher and director of the new facility. "The work done here will not only improve vineyards throughout the country, but will also give growers worldwide access to new grape varieties and clones with which to replant their vineyards."
