New Funds Awarded to Sustainable Ag Projects

Funding from the UC Davis-based UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program has been awarded to 17 production and community development projects. Among those receiving funding are projects focused on the risk of rangeland cattle shedding the water-borne pathogen Cryptosporidium, use of oil to control vineyard mites, controlled grazing of livestock on foothill rangelands, the sale of water rights to promote rural sustainable development, and an innovative cooking and science program for children. Additionally, 13 educational meetings and six graduate student projects were funded, bringing the total SAREP grant awards to $200,000. "Sustainability of society and of California are issues that are important," says Bill Liebhardt, SAREP director. "We believe that these projects will help provide information that will benefit both present and future generations."
