A new farmers' handbook offering guidelines on how to stabilizethe farm work force and increase year-round employment wasreleased this week by the UC Davis-based UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program. "How to Stabilize Your Farm Work Force (and Increase Profits, Productivity, and Personal Satisfaction)" was compiled following extensive interviews with 35 California farmers. "These farmers modified their farming operations to level out the peaks and valleys of seasonal employment and to increase their profitability," says David Campbell, economic and public policy analyst for the sustainable ag program. Funded by the sustainable ag program, the $6 publication was written by five experts in the field.
