New Jewish studies take broad approach

Fueled by growing interest in Judaic studies and by a grant from the Koret and Osher foundations, UC Davis has established a new Jewish studies program. After a trial run last year, it has expanded and will offer students more choices this year that go beyond traditional religious studies, says Professor Naomi Janowitz, director of UC Davis' religious studies program. Students will interview prominent members of the Jewish community for an oral history project, study German-Jewish intellectual history and American Jewish history, and be able to take a new course examining homeland and Diaspora in Judaism and African-American religions, among other class offerings. "It's a very broad-based, interdisciplinary program with important new opportunities for our students," Janowitz says. A full year of Hebrew is also offered in the program. The program seeks to have students pursue Jewish studies in the areas of history, sociology and comparative literature.
