A New Place Helps Those Who Struggle with Sleep

Those having a tough time getting a good night's sleep may take comfort in the opening of a new UC Davis facility for studying and treating sleep disorders. The Sleep Disorders Center in Sacramento is designed to treat patients, train physicians and investigate the causes and diagnosis of sleep disorders. "The center has special expertise in evaluating and treating patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, insomnia, narcolepsy and other conditions resulting in extreme daytime sleepiness," says Masud Seyal, an associate professor of neurology who heads the center. An estimated 30 million Americans suffer from sleep disorders and another 100 million are seriously sleep-deprived, according to David Richman, chair of the neurology department. The center operates as part of the UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center.
