New Program To Help Recruit Teachers for Diverse, Low-income Areas

To encourage aspiring teachers to work in low-income, ethnically diverse communities, UC Davis and Sacramento public schools are embarking on a pilot program of forgivable loans for Division of Education credential students on campus. The joint program between UC Davis and the Sacramento City Unified School District will begin this fall for students who plan to teach in Sacramento schools. Seven to 10 loan/scholarships will be offered, funded by existing federal and state loan programs and Sacramento-area businesses. UC Davis students selected for the program would do their student teaching in the Sacramento district, after which they would be offered a teaching position with the district. The program is intended to help the Sacramento school district provide role models for its diverse student population and to meet state bilingual education standards. The new program will be announced in a Sacramento-area ninth-grade physical science classroom at 2:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28.
