New Series Focuses On Women Scholars and Publishing

From classics to biology to psychiatry, a dozen UC Davis women scholars will talk about publishing in a new series this fall sponsored by the Consortium for Women and Research. The series builds on last year's highly popular consortium series on women faculty members and the news media. "To help women scholars make progress early on, we decided to ask experienced women faculty to share 'what they'd like to have known' when starting out on their publishing careers," said Kim Longworth, who directs the consortium. "In addition, the different disciplines have different standards and criteria for what should be published and how, so we decided on a series to address the major academic areas separately," Longworth said. First in the series is a panel of faculty members in the humanities, who will speak Monday, Oct. 26, in 3201 Hart Hall. The second panel, to meet on Monday, Nov. 2, will discuss publishing in history and social sciences. The final panel meets Monday, Nov. 9, and will focus on publishing in the sciences and engineering. Each panel session will begin at 5 p.m. Among those faculty members speaking will be Carolyn Aldwin, of human and community development; Kate Scow, of land, air and water resources; Margaret Burns, of the ophthamology department, and Penelope Knapp, of psychiatry.
