New UC Davis-Sacramento Schools Program Will Help Future Teachers

What: A loan/scholarship program to help University of California, Davis, education students become teachers in the Sacramento City Unified School District will be announced by UC Davis Chancellor Larry N. Vanderhoef and Sacramento Superintendent Terry B. Grier. The pilot program, which will begin this fall, is a joint effort by UC Davis, the Sacramento school district and area businesses to encourage university students to choose teaching careers. Seven to 10 scholarship/loans for UC Davis students enrolled in the teacher education program will be available through the program. For each year the recipients teach in the Sacramento district, a portion of the $5,000 loan will be forgiven. When: 2:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28 Where: Room 211, Luther Burbank High School 3500 Florin Rd., Sacramento Visuals: The announcement will be made during a ninth-grade physical science class. Background: The new loan/scholarship program is a joint effort between UC Davis and the Sacramento schools. The university will use existing federal and state loan programs to provide half of the amount needed for the program and, through business support, the school district will provide the remaining $2,500 portion for each student. The district currently is seeking support from the business community for the program. UC Davis students applying for the loan/scholarships would be selected according to the following priorities: commitment to working in low-income, ethnically diverse communities and membership in any of the groups who are underrepresented in the teaching profession, including women teaching math or science at the secondary level, men teaching grades kindergarten through third, minorities and teachers possessing bilingual skills. Program participants would be required to work as student teachers in the Sacramento district during their fifth year, after which they would be offered a teaching position with the district. The program will help the Sacramento school district to provide role models for its diverse student population and meet state bilingual education standards.
