Oil spills' impact on wildlife is focus of conference

Advances in biomedical research, wildlife habitatrestoration, short- and long-term impacts of oil spills,wildlife rehabilitation techniques, and interagency andindustry cooperation are among the topics of the 5thInternational Conference on the Effects of Oil on Wildlife,to take place Nov. 4-6 in Monterey.Co-sponsors and participants are the UC Davis School ofVeterinary Medicine's Wildlife Health Center and the UCDavis-based Oiled Wildlife Care Network, which operates 22care enters throughout California, each staffed by trainedpersonnel prepared to respond to oil spills withinCalifornia. Its mission is to ensure that wildlife exposedto petroleum products in the environment receive the bestpossible treatment.Other sponsors are the California Department of Fish and GameOffice of Oil Spill Prevention and Response and theInternational Bird Rescue and Rehabilitation Center. Theconference is designed for veterinarians, researchers,industry and government employees, natural resource damageassessors, and wildlife rehabilitators.
