Hoping to emphasize that everyday people, not just celebrities, are dying of AIDS, a UC Davis student has coordinated an outdoor campus memorial art exhibit. The work, titled "glass framed. found." was designed by David Fletcher, a landscape architecture and art student. The exhibit consists of 25 acrylic plastic panels that have been inserted into the ground, each covering a collection of personal objects related to a person who has died of AIDS. A single word has been painted in gold on the face of each panel, further describing the individual represented by the collection. The panels have been placed throughout the center of campus, primarily along Hutchison Drive, just south of Shields Library. "The campus landscape offers the opportunity to reach a wide array of people who wouldn't necessarily be reached through an art gallery," Fletcher says. "My ambition is that people who do not understand the disease will see a bit of themselves or their loved ones in the sites." The exhibit was planned to coincide with the annual Dec. 1 World AIDS Day. It will remain in place until Dec. 13.
