Pancake Breakfast Kicks Off Picnic Day

The Cal Aggie Alumni Association will once again start off the Picnic Day festivities at the University of California, Davis, with the 13th annual Pancake Breakfast for members of the campus and community on Saturday, April 20. And new this year, the alumni association is entering a float in the Picnic Day parade and is inviting alumni to help build the float the evening before, on Friday, April 19. The pancake breakfast will be held in Freeborn Hall at 7:30-9:30 a.m. A breakfast of pancakes, fresh fruit, potatoes and beverages will be served, and the Cal Aggie Alumni Marching Band will perform. In addition, UC Davis alumni are invited to add their name and comments before 10 a.m. to class sign-in books that will be available outside of Freeborn Hall. The books will provide an opportunity to identify former classmates who have also returned to campus this year for Picnic Day. Attendees of last year's pancake breakfast are invited to find their "mug shot" on the "Posterboards of Fame," sign it to help viewers identify those pictured and pick up a duplicate of the photo. Photographs will be taken this year, too, for attendees to spot next year. A drawing will also be held to give away a Cal Aggie alumni gift bag that will include a UC Davis sweatshirt and hat donated by the UCD Bookstore and the book "A Year in the Life of the University of California" donated by the alumni association. "Each year there are more people at the Pancake Breakfast; everyone must be telling their friends how much fun we have," said Scott Carney, alumni chair of this year's event. Carney, a special projects coordinator with FamiliesFirst Inc. in Davis, is a 1992 graduate of UC Davis. "It has become a tradition to kick off Picnic Day with friends and family at the breakfast. It's one of the best family events the alumni association hosts. Remember to come early; we've sold out two years in a row." This year's breakfast is sponsored by CAAA with USE Credit Union and co-sponsored by the UC Davis School of Medicine Alumni Association and UC Davis Medical Center Leadership Council. Tickets cost $6 for CAAA members, $7 for non-members, $4 for children 3 to 10, and are free for children under age 3. To make reservations, call the alumni association at (916) 752-0286. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door. In the spirit of this year's Picnic Day theme, "Carrying the Torch of Tradition," the alumni association is participating in an old Picnic Day Parade tradition by sponsorship of the float. Alumni are invited to come join the mixing, mingling and building of the float on Friday night, April 19, at the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center. Contact Jennifer Barber, a 1992 UC Davis alumna, at (916) 752-6733 if you would like to help, donate materials or would just like the opportunity to see other alumni.
