UC Davis continues to be a particularly rich source for Peace Corps volunteers. Since the federal program was established in 1961, 759 graduates of the Davis campus have volunteered for the two-year Peace Corps assignments in more than 100 developing nations around the world. Patricia Garamendi, associate director of the Peace Corps, will salute UC Davis for the personal contributions of its former students to the cause of world peace through individual development efforts overseas. On Thursday, Feb. 22, she will present a plaque to Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef acknowledging UC Davis' long-standing link to the Peace Corps and 55 graduates currently serving in the corps. The event will begin at 5 p.m. in the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center on campus. Northern California has long been one of the most productive of the 15 Peace Corps recruiting offices in the country, and California has contributed more volunteers than any other state.
