Philosophy Professor Emeritus Grene to Give Honorary Lecture Series

Marjorie Glicksman Grene, professor emeritus of philosophy at the University of California, Davis, will deliver three campus lectures in February as the recipient of a national honor awarded by Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest honorary society. Grene has been named the 1991-92 Romanell-Phi Beta Kappa Professor of Philosophy. The organization bestows the annual honor to recognize distinguished scholarly achievement in philosophy and contribution to public understanding of the field. "Beyond Empiricism" is the theme of Grene's talks. Below is a schedule of her lectures. • "Rethinking the Transcendental Analytic," Thursday, Feb. 6, 8 p.m., in MU II (located in Memorial Union complex). • "Beyond Empiricism?" Tuesday, Feb. 11, 8 p.m., in MU II. • "Being in the World," Thursday, Feb. 20, 8 p.m., in MU II. Grene was a professor of philosophy at UC Davis from 1965 to 1978, and is now an adjunct professor of philosophy and science studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. At UC Davis, she was selected in 1970-71 as the Faculty Research Lecturer, the highest honor bestowed by campus faculty. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi and Phi Delta Phi national honor societies. She has served as president of the Pacific division of the American Philosophical Association and of the Metaphysical Society of America. Among the first to introduce existentialist thought to the English-speaking community, Grene has published numerous articles and several books in this area, including "Dreadful Freedom," "Heidegger" and "Sartre." She also has been influential in the philosophy of biology through her writings and the direction of a number of summer institutes funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Her latest book is "Interactions: The Biological Foundation of Social Systems." -more- 2-2-2 Romanell-Phi Beta Kappa Professorship Grene's lectures are presented by the Davis chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and the UC Davis Department of Philosophy, with support from the offices of the provost and the dean of the College of Letters and Science. The professorship is endowed by Patrick and Edna Romanell. Patrick Romanell is the retired H.Y. Benedict Professor of Philosophy at the University of Texas at El Paso.
