"Tengo Casi 500 Años: Africa's Legacy to Mexico, Central and South America" is an exhibit of 40 photographs on display through May 30 at the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center on the UC Davis campus. Sponsored by the African-American and African Studies Program and the campus's Cross-Cultural Center, the photographs by Tony Gleaton offer viewers a respectful but intimate look into villagers' daily lives and rituals. The marketplace, barbershop and pool hall all are documented. Funerals, weddings and children at play also are depicted. "The photographs I create are as much an effort to define my own life, with its heritage encompassing Africa and Europe, as an endeavor to throw open the discourse on the broader aspects of the mestizaje -- the 'assimilation' of Asians, Africans and Europeans with indigenous Americans," Gleaton says. The exhibit is free and open to the public 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays.
