To honor Asian American pioneer journalist K.W. Lee and explore current attitudes about Asian Americans, the UC Davis Asian American studies program is sponsoring a conference Wednesday, Oct. 8. Lee is well-known in his field, especially for his role as an investigative reporter in setting free Chol Soo Lee, a Korean immigrant wrongly convicted of murder in 1974. Several speakers will discuss the Chol Soo Lee case in relation to current views toward Asian Americans. Speakers include Stuart Hanlon, defense lawyer for Chol Soo Lee; Bill Wong, veteran Asian American newspaper reporter and editor; Steven Park, Asian American actor; and Jay K. Yoo, Korean national assemblyman and coordinator of the Chol Soo Lee Defense Committee. At the conference, coordinators will announce the launching of a campaign to establish the K.W. Lee Research Fund to provide financial support for scholars and students to study Asian American issues. The UC Davis Shields Library will also formally announce the receipt of a 40-year collection of K.W. Lee's news articles, writing, ethnic publications, correspondence, rare original photographs and oral histories, chronicling the century-old Korean American experience. The conference will be held 1-6 p.m. in the Cabernet Room of the Silo Student Center on campus.
