Entries are being accepted for the 16th annual Celeste Turner Wright Poetry Prize competition, open to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of California, Davis.
A $100 cash prize will be awarded to the student who submits the best poem or group of poems. The competition, sponsored by the Academy of American Poets and funded by a gift from Wright, is designed to encourage the artistic and creative development of student poets. Academy-sponsored contests are now held at 181 colleges and universities. Last year, 63 students competed in the UC Davis contest.
The academy publishes an anthology of selected prize-winning poems. The last edition, "New Voices: 1984-1988," was edited by poet Donald Hall.
Entrants may submit up to five poems. The contest deadline is Tuesday, April 12. Entries should be addressed to Wright, professor emerita of English at UC Davis, and should be delivered to the UC Davis English department, Room 114, Sproul Hall. The winning poems will be announced after May 1.
Wright was the first faculty member with a Ph.D. to teach in the humanities at UC Davis and was the first woman professor on campus. She chaired the English department for 27 years. Her three volumes of poetry are "Etruscan Princess," "A Sense of Place," and "Seasoned Timber." Shields Library published her memoir, "University Woman," in 1981.
A complete list of contest rules and more information may be obtained at Room 114, Sproul Hall, which may be reached at (916) 752-2257.
