What: Newt Gingrich, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, and Anthony Lake, national security adviser to President Clinton, will be interviewed on live television by UC Davis undergraduate students this week and next, respectively.
The television satellite link allows students to question prominent figures in the nation's capital. Political science department chair Larry Berman and UC Davis Washington Center director Bruce Jentleson are coordinating this interactive distance learning program, now in its fourth year.
Berman's 10-week class focuses exclusively on the 10 items listed in the Republican Party's "Contract with America." The objective of his course is to communicate to students an awareness of politics through a more innovative and active learning process.
When: Gingrich will be interviewed on Thursday, May 25, beginning at 9:05 a.m. Lake will be interviewed on Tuesday, May 30, beginning at 9:20 a.m.
Where: 2 Wellman Hall, UC Davis
Visuals: Both Gingrich and Lake will be in Washington, D.C., and the students will see them on a large screen in their Davis classroom. The Washington guests will not be able to see the students but will be connected via an audio link.
Background: This will be the third and fourth television links for students in this introductory political science class. The course is analyzing the "Contract with America," designed by Gingrich and Congressman Richard Armey. "This is one of the most unusual courses in America today," says Berman, "because it's using long-distance learning as a regular feature of the course and it is the only course in the country in which predominantly freshman students are analyzing the issues of the contract."
The subject that will be discussed in Lake's one-hour interview will be the contract's restrictions on the United States' participation in international peacekeeping.
