Fredrick Bliss, professor of pomology at the University of California, Davis, was one of seven scientists in the nation profiled in the "1990 USDA Yearbook: People of American Agriculture." In addition, Bliss was appointed to serve on a committee of plant sciences to review the current status of plant science programs in the United States. The committee is sponsored by the Commission of Life Science of the National Research Council.
