Robert Borgen, professor of Chinese and Japanese at the University of California, Davis, has received the James Henry Breasted Prize for 1990 from the American Historical Association for his book "Sugawara no Michizane and the Early Heian Court." Published by Harvard University Press in 1986, the book surveys the cultural, intellectual and literary landscape of ninth-century Japan as reflected in the life of Sugawara no Michizane, a critical figure in that period.
