What: Two weeks before finals, students know what to expect when they come to class -- except for tomorrow, when the announcement of the 2001 UC Davis Prize for Undergraduate Teaching and Scholarly Achievement will take them by surprise. The students will be the first to discover their professor has won the $30,000 teaching award, believed to be the largest prize of its kind in the United States. When: 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 7 Where: Room 1132 in Bainer Hall, UC Davis Visuals: UC Davis Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Bob Grey will interrupt this lecture by rolling a large cake into the classroom and announcing the prize. Some props representing the professor's field of expertise will be present, either in the classroom or in a nearby laboratory. To be in time for the cake presentation, media should arrive at the classroom by 9:20 a.m. Directions and Parking: From Interstate 80, travel north on Highway 113 to the first exit, Hutchison Drive. Turn right and travel on Hutchison to the traffic light at LaRue Road. Turn right onto LaRue. Follow around the curve to the left to the second street on the left, Bioletti Way. Turn left on Bioletti. Turn right on the first street to the right, Bainer Hall Drive. Go one block on Bainer Hall Drive. Turn left at the traffic circle onto an unnamed street. Go one block to the end of that street, then turn right into a narrow, dead-end driveway along the left side of a long building. Park along that driveway on the right or left, leaving room for traffic down the center. Reporters in unmarked vehicles should place a business card on the dashboard. Walk to the classroom by continuing ahead, keeping the building (which is Bainer Hall) on your right. Go all the way to the end of Bainer Hall and enter at the main entrance. In the lobby, enter the hallway on the far right. Room 1132 is the second door on the right.
