The academic success of UC Davis biology students from underrepresented groups has improved dramatically in the past five years, according to Mark McNamee, interim dean of biological sciences. He attributes the success to the campus's Biology Undergraduate Scholars Program. The goal of BUSP is to increase the participation of Hispanics, African Americans, Native Americans and other underrepresented groups in biology-related professions. More than 340 UC Davis students have participated in BUSP and a number of these students have already entered outstanding graduate programs in the sciences, according to McNamee. Participation in BUSP has led to improved grades for BUSP students as well as an approximately ten-fold increase in the retention of underrepresented students as successful biology majors. The program provides students with academic enrichment, personal support, practical experience and financial support during the first two years of college.
