California's Prop. 227 would implement a uniform policy statewide for children who have limited proficiency in English, according to a UC Davis professor, and cause sweeping changes in how bilingual education is handled on the district level.
In an effort to inform the public about the potential effects of the ballot measure, a forum co-sponsored by UC Davis and the Cesar Chavez Parent-Teacher Association, will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 21, in the multipurpose room of Cesar Chavez Elementary School, 1221 Anderson Rd., in Davis.
The forum, says Robert Blake, Spanish professor and director of the UC Davis Second Language Acquisition Institute, is not a political debate, but rather, "aims to get people to read the bill and see if it makes sense."
Among those speaking will be Blake, UC Davis Division of Education director Fred Genesee, other UC Davis faculty members and representatives from local school districts. Topics will include a discussion of what has failed in bilingual education, the proposed remedy, cost of the proposal and the impact on school and parent choice with respect to educating students with limited English proficiency. A question and answer session will follow the presentations.
The forum is free and open to the public. More information can be found at .
