Protesters Arrested at Primate Center

Three animal activists were arrested early this afternoon at the University of California, Davis, for trespassing during a relatively peaceful protest in front of the campus's primate research center. Those arrested were Geoffrey George Dervishian, 20, of Fresno; Joshua Harper, 22, of Portland, Ore.; and Katie Louis, 19, of Portland, Ore. All three had hopped over a police barrier placed at the entrance to the California Regional Primate Research Center, located west of the main campus. The arrests occurred within 30 minutes after the protest rally began at 12:15 p.m. About 23 protesters participated. Yesterday, Rick Bogle, the Oregon leader of the so-called "Ape Army," was arrested as he began a planned nine-day sit-in at the federally funded research facility. Bogle has been holding protests at primate research facilities around the country, usually accompanied by stuffed monkey toys. On Nov. 1, he was arrested at UC Davis at 5:20 a.m. for trespassing, after violating arrangements made with UC Davis police for his presence near the center. He returned later that day and was arrested again at 4 p.m., also for trespassing. Currently, Bogle is in the Yolo County jail. The three protesters arrested today also have been taken there. The California Regional Primate Research Center has been the site of numerous animal activist protests over the years. The most recent was last April, when 32 activists were arrested, primarily for acts of civil disobedience, during a raucous four-hour protest. The primate center -- one of seven around the country funded by the National Institutes of Health -- is widely respected for its use of non-human primates as animal models for biomedical research. The center at UC Davis focuses on the use of monkeys to study human health problems such as AIDS, fetal development, reproductive problems and the health impacts of environmental pollutants. Over 100 local and visiting scientists use the facility each year, under state, federal and campus animal-care guidelines and regulations.
