Public Invited to Asian Pacific Cultural Week Activities

Lectures, music, films and a cultural fair are among the free events open to the public April 18-23 during Asian Pacific Cultural Week at the University of California, Davis. This year's theme is "Building Bridges, Connecting Worlds." Event highlights include: • The Asia-Pacific Film Festival, featuring nine films from countries including China, Korea, India, Japan and Iran. 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. April 17-21 (only 7 p.m. April 18), Room 194 in the Chemistry Bldg. • "A Symphony of Asian Spirit," performances by the modern rock group Shining Scribes and traditional drumming by the Korean Student Association. Noon Monday, April 18, on the Quad • "Are We Really 'We the People'?", a discussion of immigration issues, involving Claudia Martinez, Mexican American Legal Defense Fund; Bill Wong, Lenny Goldberg and Associates; Vic Gaerlan, Filipinos for Affirmative Action; Vivian Chang, an advocate for Asian immigrant women; and moderator Rod Paulino. 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 18, MUII in the Memorial Union • "Polishing the Silver Screen: Highlights of the Past and Present," a talk by independent filmmaker Kenn Kashima about pioneers in Asian filmmaking. Noon Tuesday, April 19, MUII in the Memorial Union • "Guarding with Glory," a talk by Bruce Yamashita, who recently won a lawsuit in which he charged the military with discrimination against minorities. 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, MUII in the Memorial Union • "Terrestrial Rights: Hearts Claim the Land," a talk by political activist Kekuni Blaisdell, known for working toward self-government for native Hawaiians. Noon Wednesday, April 20, MUII in the Memorial Union • "A Harmony of Cultures: Afro-Asian Jazz," a progressive jazz performance by saxophonists Francis Wong and John Tchicai. 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, Room 3 of Kleiber Hall • "Our Feet Walk the Sky, Women of the South Asian Diaspora," poetry, prose, fiction and nonfiction readings by members of the South Asian Women's Collective. Noon Thursday, April 21, MUII in the Memorial Union • "Strength to Speak, Power to Heal," a discussion by members of the Asian Women's Shelter and Narika on domestic violence in Asian American and immigrant communities.
