The cost of children to mothers, fathers and the state will be the subject of a talk at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the University of California, Davis.
"Who Pays for the Kids? Gender and the Structures of Constraint" will be delivered by Nancy Folbre, a professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts, at the University Club. Her talk is free and open to the public.
Folbre, currently a scholar-in-residence in the Women's Studies program and the Women's Resources and Research Center at UC Davis, will critique proposals for the reform of California welfare policies and discuss the importance of greater investments in children's education and welfare.
In addition to serving on the University of Massachusetts faculty, Folbre is a member of the Center for Popular Economics in Amherst, Mass., an organization that provides literacy training for community organizers and activists. She has published widely in both economics and women's studies journals and is working on two books. One is a comparative history of the changing organization of social reproduction, and the other is an intellectual history of the relationship between political economy and feminist theory.
During her residence at UC Davis, Folbre is presenting papers in various seminars. For more information, call (916) 752-3372.
